Warnings Signs Your Child Is Being Bullied

School has officially started. For many parents and students, it can be a stressful time with many changes: new teachers, new students, new subjects to learn, etc.

When your child is in a new environment and around new people, there might be an adjustment period. You might see a shift in behaviors and moods as your child tackles these changes. But if you start to see drastic changes in temperament and personality, there could be a bigger reason at play.

Here are some signs of bullying to be aware of:

  • Unexplainable injuries (scratches, bruises, cuts): When asked about these injuries, they might look ashamed or visibly upset even though they have 'forgotten' what caused the injuries.

  • Changes in morning routines: a drastic change in how the child gets ready for school might be an indicator. If your child is usually excited about school and is now consistently worried or anxious.

  • Destroyed or missing belongings: Clothes, books, and any owned items that might disappear or come back broken without cause given.

  • Attitude change toward school: If you start to notice declining grades or apathetic interest in classwork.

  • An increase in feeling sick: Children can manifest their emotions physically in upset stomachs, headaches or lethargy. Watch for a pattern of increased requests for staying home from school.

  • Drastic behavior changes: If you start to notice unusual patterns in mood swings or new emotions like aggression, sudden lack of interest in seeing friends, or being withdrawn.

  • Disruptive sleep: Seeing signs of having a hard time falling asleep or staying asleep or an increase in nightmares.

What to do if you see signs of bullying:

  • Keep lines of communication open.

  • Talk to teachers about anything they may have noticed or if there are issues in the classroom.

  • Reinforce you believe your children and you are there to keep them safe.
