THE GOLD STANDARD FOR DIAGNOSING AUTISM

Over the past several years, the number of children who have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has increased. ASD is a developmental disability that impacts behavior, communication, social interaction, and problem-solving. Often parents suspect their child may have autism when they notice difficulties with relating to others, avoiding eye contact, repetitive behaviors or words, having trouble adapting when routines change, or have a delay in speech. Autism isn’t caused by just one thing. We do know that genetics have a lot to do with autism, and there is a higher risk for autism for a child if a sibling has autism, a child has chromosomal conditions, and when a child is born to older parents. Autism is also more prevalent in males than females.

Diagnosis and early intervention can help and support a child, teen, or adult in understanding the condition, getting connected with appropriate therapies, and implementing the right supports for school or work. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed when thinking about a potential diagnosis and how it will impact you and your family. We can help.

Diagnosing for autism can occur at any age, and the gold standard for assessing for ASD is the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) which is used throughout the world in schools and professional settings. It is an in-depth evaluation of developmental levels, social interaction, communication and behaviors for any age from 30 months through late adulthood. The assessment usually lasts around 60 minutes and is scored to identify behaviors which fit into the autism spectrum. The resulting report can be provided to schools to support Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and other therapeutic services.

Here at Arcadian Therapeutic Services, we want to give individuals the best opportunity for success. We also want to provide an affordable approach to autism testing and offer the ADOS-2 assessment for $1000. If you are interested in having you or your child evaluated, contact us to learn more.
