How To Listen To Your Intuition

Every person experiences an inner knowing, called intuition. Many can feel their intuition in different ways; in dreams, physical changes like stomach aches or heart beats, or sometimes even an inner voice. But, how do you learn to listen to your intuition? This can be a tough concept that people have a hard time grasping because there are so many external factors that influence decision making, pushing past intuition. Regardless, intuition is truly like a sixth sense that can help guide you into the right paths through life.

How does your intuition speak to you?

Your intuition can speak to you in many ways through senses: body sensations, dreams, direct and indirect intuition, creative endeavors, or while the brain feels quiet.

Direct intuition: This is when you have the answer directly placed in front of you, such as your inner voice telling you exactly what you need to do, or you know when you find the perfect house by your body getting chills.

Indirect intuition: This is when you have to interpret a signal, such as when you have a dream that has a deeper meaning, or you are unclear of a specific decision that you need to dig deeper to understand.

Generally, intuition won’t give up on important decisions and feelings. Whether you listen to the first signals or not, you will most likely get more signals in the future to help guide you in the right direction.

How do you develop your intuition?

  1. Meditate or find quiet time.

Messages can come at a time of quiet and stillness, so finding a moment to be with your thoughts without the presence of distractions can help you understand and strengthen your intuitive thoughts and feelings.

  1. Engage and creative activities.

Art, journaling, writing, and other creative processes help activate lesser-used parts of the brain that can help develop and strengthen cognitive processes. This can be both therapeutic and beneficial to your intuition.

  1. Listen to your feelings, ignore your thoughts (just for a moment)

It is easy to get caught up in your thought patterns and external factors that influence decision making, but oftentimes your body is trying to tell you something different. When people say  they have a “gut instinct” they truly can feel their intuition within their gut. Sometimes you need to let go of your contact wheel of thoughts, and find what your feelings are telling you.

If you are finding it difficult to listen to your inner voice and your intuition, it may be beneficial for you to seek counseling. Therapy is designed to help you dive deeper into your feelings than you would go by yourself. We can help you develop your intuitive skills at Arcadian Therapy!
